One
of the features of Abruzzo is the morphological variety of an area that combines
sea and mountain, national parks, nature reserves and old town centres, all
linked by a highly efficient road network. From the mouth of the Tronto river to
that of the Trigno, 129 kilometres of coastline, sunny and pleasant from spring
to autumn, front the highest mountains of the Appennine; in fact the snow-capped
peaks of the Gran Sasso and Maiella can often be seen from the sandy holidays
beaches. The history of the region is bound to the continuous sea-mountain
relationship, lived by the locals as a meeting of two different and integrable
cultures. Abruzzo is one of the Italian regions to have maintained its customs,
thanks mainly to its mountains, the highest of Appennine. The presence of old
centres along the communication routes between coast and interior is today the
greatest demostration of an only apparently closed and conservative people who
are instead always well-disposed to innovation and travel, communication and
hospitality.
